Myths and Truths, about Laser Hair Removal
Now that summer is here, I am receiving so many questions regarding one of my more popular treatments during the summer, Laser Hair Removal. Clients are wanting to look and feel their best over the summer, however their seems to be some information out there that is confusing to this service.
Based on the questions I get from both men and women, here are some Myths and Truths regarding Laser Hair Removal Treatments…
I need to avoid the sun, before and after my laser hair removal treatment.
There some truth to this. You should avoid sun exposure, including tanning beds, and artificial tanning (spray tans, tanning lotions, etc.) for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment. If you have a tan, you can still have a laser treatment, this just means that the laser will have to be turned down and you may need a few extra treatments. I suggest at least avoiding the sun 72 hours before and after your treatment, and use sunscreen! At Laser Vantage, we have two different Laser Hair Removal systems. I will factor in your skin type, current hair and determine the one that will suit you best. Todays laser technologies are designed for all skin types, it’s just a matter of finding the right treatment option for you.
One laser hair removal treatment is enough to remove all my unwanted hair.
This is not true. One laser hair removal treatment is not enough to kill all the hair follicles. Your body is always producing new hair. Each hair goes through the 3 growth phases independently of the neighboring hairs, so not all hairs will be in the same phase at the same time. Depending on age, our body may have different hair growth with hormonal changes as well. So long story short, Laser Hair Removal will decrease the amount of hair, normally you see the best results in the first session, however depending on your own personal factors (skin type, hair type, ethnicity, age) it may take several sessions to see optimal results in hair reduction. Hair may take up to two weeks to fall out.
Laser treatments are so painful!
It depends on the person and the area of treatment. Personally I find waxing more uncomfortable then laser hair removal. Some describe the laser flash as feeling like an elastic band snapping on their skin. If you have had a IPL treatment before, it’s the same thing. I recommend taking an advil before your session, or try a localized numbing cream that can be applied in the areas you are targeting.
I should not shave before my laser hair removal treatment.
No, quite the opposite actually. You should grow out the hair in the area, then the day before the treatment, shave the area completely. The reason for shaving the day before is because this will avoid discomfort from any shaving irritation. This also helps the laser locate the follicle and avoid any possible surface confusion with the laser. Preparation is key before your treatment. Do not wax or pluck before your session or between treatments. You will remove the hair follicle the laser is trying to find, delaying results.
All laser hair removal systems work the same way.
This is so false! Recently I was shocked to discover a locally advertised businesses using drug store (consumer) laser hair removal systems to treat clients. Unlike “at home” systems, professional brands undergo extensive maintenance, are stronger in frequency (providing better results), and the professionals who use them, like myself, are trained with that specific machine. At home you run the risk of burns, or misuse which can lead to further issues. I strongly urge you to do your research and ask questions about the specific system used when looking into laser hair removal. It will save you disappointment and perhaps the frustration with a complication.
